Comparison of two- and three-layer restacked Dion–Jacobson phase niobate nanosheets as catalysts for photochemical hydrogen evolution†

چکیده
Restacked niobate nanosheets were prepared by exfoliation of the corresponding Dion–Jacobson type layered perovskites (HCa2Nb3O10, HSr2Nb3O10 and HLaNb2O7) with tetra(n-butyl)ammonium hydroxide and subsequent treatment with hydrochloric acid. The nanosheets were characterized by means of X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. With modification by platinum nanoparticles as additional catalysts, these nanosheet materials were tested as photocatalysts for hydrogen evolution from water containing 2-propanol as an electron donor under ultraviolet irradiation (l > 300 nm). The activity of a triple-layered nanosheet (HSr2Nb3O10) was an order of magnitude higher than that of the HLaNb2O7 nanosheet with double perovskite layers, despite their physicochemical similarity. Physicochemical analyses suggested that in triple-layered perovskite nanosheets, photocatalytic activity is influenced by several factors including the conduction band potential and the band-gap energy (the number of available photons), which are derived from the distortion of perovskite blocks consisting of NbO6 octahedra.

Calcium Niobate Nanosheets Prepared by the Polymerized Complex Method as Catalytic Materials for Photochemical Hydrogen Evolution
The Dion-Jacobson phase niobate perovskite, KCa2Nb3O10, was prepared by the polymerized complex (PC) method. The corresponding proton-exchanged material, HCa2Nb3O10, was then exfoliated by reaction with tetra(n-butyl)ammonium hydroxide (TBAOH), yielding unilamellar colloidal nanosheets whose lateral dimensions increased with the final calcination temperature in the PC synthesis. By restacking t...

The layered Dion−Jacobson phase KCa2Nb3O10 is known to catalyze photochemical water reduction and oxidation under UV light in the presence of sacrificial agents. The same reactions are catalyzed by tetrabutylammonium hydroxide-supported HCa2Nb3O10 nanosheets obtained by chemical exfoliation of the parent phase. Here we describe a factorial study into the effects of nanoscaling, sacrificial char...

Well-dispersed Rh(OH)3 nanoparticles were deposited in the interlayer galleries of a Dion-Jacobson type layered perovskite (ACa2Nb3O10: A=H or K). X-ray photoelectron spectra and zeta potential measurements suggest covalent bonding (Rh-O-Nb) between the nanoparticles and the niobate sheets. After calcination of Rh(OH)3/KCa2Nb3O10 at 350 degrees C in air, interlayer Rh(OH)3 nanoparticles were tr...

Efficient evolution of hydrogen through electrocatalysis at low overpotentials holds tremendous promise for clean energy. Hydrogen evolution can be easily achieved by electrolysis at large potentials that can be lowered with expensive platinum-based catalysts. Replacement of Pt with inexpensive, earth-abundant electrocatalysts would be significantly beneficial for clean and efficient hydrogen e...
